Project Spotlight

Films that Move is a home grown, award-winning, film-festival-meets-artist-residency that has charmed artists and audiences alike for the last twelve years. In 2024, we shift into the next chapter, letting go of the name Experimental Film Virginia and embracing an expanded, global vision as Films that Move.

We look forward to the August premiere of the films in our original location right here in Cape Charles. Meanwhile, we are planning the 2024-2025 season on the road to Europe, South America and beyond, bringing other small towns a dose of big art. We are proud to be a Virginia Commission of the Arts “Exemplary Program and Pinnacle Event” and  hope you will join us on August 2 for the much anticipated premiere.

Films that Move promotes unity for the rural, geographically dispersed Eastern Shore as “one big small town” while connecting the shore to the rest of Coastal Virginia and beyond, building a brand for our area as a cultural destination. The films we make, the stories we discover, and the people we include come from all corners of the shore and the world. The beauty of our program lies in the hybrid nature of the disciplines involved, the artists’ cultural backgrounds and the subjects we explore in the films, all centered around dance as a story-telling language. Our films have screened at South by Southwest, Lincoln Center in New York and winning awards and accolades at film festivals across the globe. We have welcomed Academy Award winner Chris Cooper, Oscar nominated director David Darg, award-winning directors Josephine Decker and Adi Halfin along with the highest level choreographers and performers such as Bobbi Jean Smith, Ching-i Chang, Paul Singh, Christina Ricucci, Jye Hwei Lin and so many more. Featured artists hail from Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company to leading companies in Italy, Spain, Taiwan and New York. The Films that Move family is an international network of collaborators and artists, facilitated by Founder and Artistic Director Renata Sheppard.

Director Natalia Prodovak and Anish Patel decide the shot while dancer, Angelica Armoni takes her spot in the background. Shot on location in Cape Charles, Virginia, 2018.
